Crumpets

I’m not sure I would have wanted to cavort with an ageing film star in a room above where my dead parents had manifested earlier that evening, but each to their own. Nor would I be particularly in favour of a threesome with my sister, but I’m not a twin.

I was curious though about when they departed and if they had witnessed Yemi leaving or coming back. As Tobias had granted the crew a day off, following Yemi and Amy’s tiff at the restaurant, I finally would have some free time to get out there and start sleuthing.

As Thursday morning slid through the cracks in my bedroom curtains, I took out a notepad and made a list of people I needed to speak to that day. The first item to check off was a visit to Market Square. Shelta may still be staying with the Needhams, so I needed to get there quickly. If she had already left for the mainland, then I had a ferry to catch. But not before I caught up with the Leybourne twins.

“Nice of you to pop in, Reverend. Are you here for the vigil?” Avril tidied the dog-eared magazines on the waiting area’s coffee table.

“What vigil?”

Verity was refilling the sapphire water sanitiser at her workstation. “For Kat Pringle. God rest her soul. The stallholders are taking a minute’s silence at eleven o’clock.” She plopped some black combs into the container.

“That’s a lovely gesture. I will try to attend.”

“So Vicar,” Avril slid behind the reception desk and flipped open a large pink appointment diary. “When shall I book you in?”

“Oh, right. I actually didn’t come in to make an appointment, but I suppose whilst I’m here.” I took out my phone and after a bit of toing and froing, we settled on a date for a much needed cut and blow-dry.

Avril leant over the table and picked at my hair. “I put you in for a colour as well. Your roots will be shocking by then.” She scribbled the date and time on a card and handed it to me. “So, what did you come in for?”

“Er, I was wondering if you saw Yemi, the cameraman with Tobias Dean, coming or going from the pub on Tuesday night?”

The two sisters looked furtively at each other. Verity came across and nudged Avril out of the way so that she could get to the petty cash box. “I need to pop to D and V before we open. Your sister has started doing spiced pumpkin lattes. Have you tried them? I’ll get you one. They are delicious.”

“Verity. Thank you, but please can you wait just a minute? I know you were with Tobias that night.” Avril fell into the receptionist’s chair. Verity steadied herself on the back of the same chair. “I’m not here to judge. Honest. I want to help find Kat’s killer and, well, she had an affair with Yemi years ago. That makes him a prime suspect, you see?”

“Vicar, just so you know, we don’t normally do that sort of thing.
